    ... or heritage streetcars?

Easy sharing of the lines requires trolleypole streetcars, and most places have abandoned trolleypole streetcars except for heritage cars or when required to share infrastructure with trolleybuses.

And definitely you'd rather not be running on trolleypoles on the dedicated section of the Rapid Streetcar route when you are running 60mph.

    •  They're heritage cars (0+ / 0-)

Those are the only ones that run at street level downtown. However, in the early 90's when the underground portions of the system were being upgraded, LRVs did in fact run on small portions of the routes that also accommodated trolley buses, so it isn't out of the question.

... are modular bidirectional vehicles, and with a bidirectional vehicle you've got to swing the trolleypole around because the trolleypole has to trail the direction of travel. And the tramwire infrastructure for bow collectors is simpler than the tramwire infrastructure for trolleypole collectors because of frogs at junctions and such (though for the intermittent electric supply described above that would go away as an issue).

I presume that there is some design of pantograph that would press it the collector up against the two lines with a non-conducting section pressing against the ground return line.

The simplest where trolleybuses or heritage streetcars are in use is for the modern streetcar to use trolleypoles as well, but trolleypoles are not ideal for rapid streetcars where you are going 60mph in the dedicated rail corridor sections.
