  •  Yeah, I heard of a downtown that is ... (6+ / 0-)

... so crowded that nobody goes there anymore.

If the Orange Line was a total "piece of shit" as transport infrastructure, nobody would ride it. If nobody rode it, the buses would never ride with overloads and there would be ample spare seats for passengers displaced by a passenger in a wheelchair.

The problems sound like it is under-resourced ~ all local transport requires subsidy to avoid being underprovided, and while we have entrenched the subsidy to local car transport and spread it among a wide number of hidden and cross subsidies, we have not been so successful in entrenching subsidies for alternatives to Auto-Uber-Alles.

I'd not be surprised if the Orange Line is over the threshold mentioned above in the comments where a rational cost benefit comparison would call for building a rail corridor, but was built as a BRT anyway in order to save capital costs up front at the expense of higher per passenger mile operating costs down the track.

    •  Three vintage Los Angeles streetcars (0+ / 0-)

Perhaps you already know San Francisco has three vintage streetcars that once roamed the city of Los Angeles.

      Los Angeles 1052

      Los Angeles 1080

The red Pacific Electric streetcar is probably in the Geneva Yard or off being condition to run up and down Market Street as it did a year or two ago
