  •  I can't use food stamp money for (19+ / 0-)

paper, personal hygiene or cleaning products (laundry detergent). It can't be used on prepared food in a deli.

These folks really do not understand being HUNGRY and not knowing how you are going to get food for one meal, let alone a week. If you spend a large percent on a luxury item, it leaves less for the rest of your meals. Which will leave you hungry. A feeling you desperately want to avoid.

Last fall I had a temporary job assignment where I was told there was a 'food thief' and not to leave my lunch in the staff fridge. I said something about one of the 'one in eight' and had to explain it. The gal looked quite surprised and admitted she hadn't thought of that.

Right now, with all kinds of fresh fruits and veggies on sale, I am doing pretty well on 50% of my usual budget - which also included some of the restricted items above. I have never bought much prepared food. I am on a low to moderate carb diet, so no cookies, chips, or other junk food.

It still requires very close attention to sales, how much you are racking up in the cart and juggling going over the weekly amount to take advantage of a sale (meat, canned and  frozen foods, some dairy) that will cut expenses for the next week or two.

That of course means you must have a REFRIGERATOR. Which, as Colbert and Stewart noted last week, 99% of the poor people in America HAVE. 80 something % have a microwave!! I have a broken one.

Now, time to go fill out more job applications, after checking whether they are located near an RTD route.  Being poor and unemployed is hard work.

Next month, if I am still on stamps, I will have to find out if dog food is ok.

Too much sanity may be madness. The maddest of all is to see the world as it is and not as it should be. Don Quixote "Man of La Mancha"
