  •  re. confusing: think of cars, music, or sports. (4+ / 0-)

When you first started listening to music in a deliberate way, it took time to learn the names of the artists or composers, and the songs or compositions.  At first it was confusing, but over time it became clear.   After a while you could spot the influences of one on another, e.g. "so-and-so's trumpet playing was influenced by Louie Armstrong."

Same case for (depending on your interests) makes & models of cars, for sports teams and their players, for cooking and recipes, for styles of clothing or architecture, and for the skills that you use at work.

This stuff is easy to learn by just continuing to read and keep up to date, and eventually it clicks into place so you start recognizing certain names and the words that describe certain ideas.

Context is essential, and depends on education.  But I confess to a shocking sense of lassitude and avoidance  in the wearisome prospect of becoming an expert on the rich, well-connected and remarkably benighted nutcases who are my avowed enemy as a liberal and a lesbian.
