    Oh, because sex is... you know, titillating and you can act all outraged even though your pants are a little tight, and to really ban all that stuff you have to research it very, very thoroughly....

    On the other hand, those poor people aren't us (even if they are, we're the good poor people as opposed to those undeserving poor people over there).

    And usury?  That would mean going after important people, who by their mere importance are too important for us to bother while they go about their important business, even if that business keeps us on the edge of bankruptcy our whole lives.

      the fear of mortality, because sexuality brings home to them the reality that we are embodied creatures; fear and hatred of women, whose bodies are interpreted as being "more embodied" because of fleshiness and menstruation and childbirth; and how easy it is to control people if you can control their thinking about the most intimate and private acts.
