    ...generally isn't sufficient even for most entry-level IT jobs.  Probably shouldn't be like that, but outside of the most rigid workplaces (which typically attach to huge companies with large, non-core IT organizations and are increasingly rare these days) you may encounter reactions to certificates ranging from ambivalence to skepticism.  For someone just starting out, your outlets for gaining real world experience beyond the paper trail are almost entirely limited to internships, lab work at a university, or volunteer work on open source projects.  

    Fortunately, save for the investment in time and energy, building an open source resume is free.  A certificate can certainly help, but showing that you've taken the initiative to tackle a particular set of problems in the real world on your own time is even more valuable.
