We've been surveying language use among consistent Republican voters.

There's a strain of domination-with-disdain in their descriptions of others -- not limited to poor people.

One thing to keep in mind is that Capitalism is a very, very broad form of economic competition. Modern Capitalism takes this all-against-all struggle and routes the smartest children to the best paying occupations -- which was not always the case.

Back 100 years, you saw smart people in all sorts of jobs. Even 50 years ago we had first-rate women teaching school and sectioning fruit for canning and doing agricultural work. Now those gals are lawyers, managers for the corporations, media personalities.

Smart men from lower-rank families spoke in lower-class accents and were similarly excluded from higher-paying jobs. Teevee changed that, mostly. Everybody smart goes for higher paying jobs -- that's what the schools do.

Brains have been routed to brain work. Dominionism is just one of the excuses for it.

All against all. The smartest... against everybody else with no limit.

How did a greater emphasis meritocracy and other generally good movements (giving women other options than teaching) contribute to where we are today? There was a time when it was well understood that smart and rich were not expected to be synonymous; now I worry that there are those that think rich and moral are synonymous.

      •  That..... is not paranoia. (2+ / 0-)

And look at the children of these dominionist  nouveau riche families.

They remind me of stories of the Jacksonians who went forth to turn Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas into cotton plantations after they had driven off the Indians.
