if it's even correct, is CHEAP. Really cheap.

How many lives have been saved by tornado alerts? Hurricane alerts? Flood alerts? How much property/assets have been saved because they could be moved, secured, or quickly repaired because the supplies were in place beforehand?

Read about the 1900 Galveston hurricane. Or the Johnstown flood. And then tell me we don't need a GOVERNMENT weather service that gives the info to everyone, FOR FREE.

Read the Congressional committee report.  That cut is about 33% of NOAA's budget (a la Canada, see above).

This is not an idle threat.

but how many billions of dollars in crops have been saved by alerts of severe weather in time for the farmers to take precautions? For example, warnings of severe frosts so citrus growers can do what they can to protect their trees and fruit from severe damage, or even just the ordinary backyard gardener going outside to cover the tomato plants?

How many plane crashes have been averted because the airlines were able to access weather information so they can delay or reroute flights that would go through hazardous flying conditions?

but good forecasting helps farmers know when to till, to plant, when to apply pesticides (for max impact with minimum quantities) and when to harvest.  The information is as important to the small scale sustainable and organic farmers as well as to the mega farms.  Also needed for the best animal husbandry.

        Privatizing the NWS is bullsh-t.

brief pilots before congress, in its infinite wisdom, took the task and the jobs from the NWS about 1973 and gave them to the FAA. They SUCKED at it (then). Don't know about it now.

With no warning system, Irene probably would have killed 1000s of people along the east coast.
