  •  The importance is different. (9+ / 0-)

The strategic position of high speed passenger rail is with respect to passenger transport. Setting up an "either/or" regarding whether we should have a viable passenger transport system or whether we should have a viable freight transport system seems, to me, to be dooming the US economy to failure: we need both viable passenger and viable freight transport systems.

    •  Freight rail beats air and truck (7+ / 0-)

in fuel efficiency now, always has in fact, back to the days of steam trains.

But we regulated air and trucks to prominence starting in the late 1960's and sacrificed rail.

An economy that that doesnt take advantage of this in 2050 simply wont be as competitive. An express 300 mph train does the 2780 miles NYC to LA in... what 10 hrs. Next ground is more than possible, its the smartest way to go.

... is rapid freight rail, 100mph single stack container, not light package bullet train freight. That targets long haul freight trucking, which is a quite substantial petroleum consumer. Essentially the 90mph~100mph freight transit overcomes train marshaling delays at the railhead, resulting in shorter loading dock to loading dock trip times for short haul container truck to the origin railhead, rapid freight rail to the destination railhead, and short haul container truck to the destination loading dock.

A key point about single stack 100mph container freight is that it requires much the same strength from trestles and similar infrastructure as double stack 60mph, so that Rapid Rail Freight paths can be scheduled on infrastructure partly shared with regular Express Freight.

I've seen a unit train hauling Tropicana-emblazoned refrigerator cars. I think that with high speed freight capabilities, that fruit can get from Florida to New York a lot fresher.
