There are a lot of fundamentalist conservative republicans out there in lalaland and they are a huge voting block and they respond to polls in a big way and they make their feelings known to repub politicians a lot.  It's in their churches.  Christian church memberships are huge.  Christian churchgoers are a big population in America....especially in the South and the Midwest.  She's pandering to that voting block.  Try being a presidential candidate and NOT saying you don't believe in Jesus Christ and NOT a christian.  You're doomed.

It's a truth the politicians know.  There are exceptions for some of the "lower offices", but not many, so it stands true for those as well.

These people honestly believe that because they pray, they "talk" to God..."hear" from God.

It's an inconvenient and uncomfortable truth that sometimes people on the far left either ignore or just choose to believe is not true in the first place.

a big number of people who go to church don't do so out of some unshakable religious conviction, and they don't always blindly believe everything they're told.

Many of them go for SOCIAL purposes. It gets them meeting their neighbors, it gives them something to belong to, it provides some activities for their family to do together. It gives them a place to show off, make business connections, meet new people.

When you move somewhere new, a lot of people go to church to get a feel for the area, to make friends, to build connections.

Once you start, you pretty much have to keep going or have everybody talk about you.
