I mean, the people who said a couple of months ago they approve and now disapprove, I assume, are progressives frustrated by the debt limit compromises.  These are people who might not be as enthusiastic on election day, but are not likely to vote for, say, Rick Perry.

Bush II, by contrast, always had the right wing pretty locked up, but his growing opposition was from the other side as his numbers went down.

I do not have any data to back this up -- it is just a hypothesis at this point -- but I do not think these dropping numbers are the end of the world in the reelection context.

    •  Nope (5+ / 0-)

93% of liberals said they would vote for him.

No spinning this, it's bad. Wouldn't expect any different with this economy.

      Will work for food
      Will die for oil
Will fight for power and to the rich go the spoils
The millionaires get to pay less tax
The working poor get to fall through the cracks

      according to that poll.

    •  like last time, the left will simply stay home (0+ / 0-)

Obama just hasn't been much into loving progressives or poor people, and on election day they will likely show that lack of love back by finding other things to do than going down and voting.

      •  The partisan left turned out. They did not (11+ / 0-)

        stay home.

        Left-leaning independents did stay home.

        •  Obama had college students and poor (4+ / 0-)

people who rarely vote go to the polls in huge numbers for him.  There was a democratic council person in my city who otherwise would not have won except for the flood of university students who for the first time voted and voted straight democratic.  That enthusiasm and excitement was setting the democratic party up to be the dominant party for generations. By his neglect of progressive policies, Obama has given that momentum completely away.

Yes, the hard-core partisans will vote.  But less reliable voters who since Obama has been elected have seen it made more difficult to vote by numerous state efforts (without any protest from the Obama administration) - they will be the ones that say it's not worth the effort.  Which makes Obama's road to re-election extremely challenging.

          •  I'm not disagreeing. But the "left abandoned (2+ / 0-)

Dem-leaning indies want the same things we want, but they're less patient with a party that doesn't deliver. They won't turn out for an ineffective Dem party, even while we still will.
