  •  There is a conservative element here, but it (5+ / 0-)

is not quite as simple as that; I've been to Winger Land and this is not it. The cohort that is recognizably right-wing would be the ranchers and small business owners. The poor and working class here are tragically underinformed, and hold a slew of ideas from all over the political spectrum mixed with a large dose of CT. Most of them do not vote.

I support torturous regimes! Also, I kick puppies.

    •  Yes, there's a counterculture element. (4+ / 0-)

Much more so in the western slope counties than in Inyo and Tulare counties, where I lived.

But Nevada County voted for a Democrat twice for president in the last fifty years, and all of its state and national reps are Republicans. Conservatives control the political levers whereby the county derives most of its funding, and they have no problem decrying liberal politics while sucking down liberal tax money.

The real enemy of the good is not the perfect, but the mediocre.
