  •  We hate teachers. (21+ / 0-)

Oh, we may like or respect this teacher, or that teacher, but as a species, teachers are held in contempt be a large percentage of Americans. "Blame the Teacher" is a more popular pass-time than baseball. Perhaps the haters think, "If teachers are any good, then how come I'm so stupid?"

    •  Yep, it's an all too easy thing to be! (0+ / 0-)

Also, it's a mantra promoted heavily on the right, particularly by those who want to kill the public school systems and give our tax dollars to private (mostly religious ones) and to for-profit charter schools.  The problem is once our taxpayer dollars go out the door, there is not enough accountability.

Do any of you read John Raymond, syndicated child care expert  whose articles are carried in many newspapers? Though I long since passed the parenting phase, I've started to read him and decided a while back that politically he has to lean right.  Really, in many respects, he's a negative person.  Lots like him because he's a no-nonsense sort of advice giver and strict.

Today he wrote about homework and teachers expecting parents to help with homework and how student performance in schools is no better, in fact, worse than it was in, say, 1971.  All this by way of telling parents NOT to do their child's homework, something I do agree with by the way.  But it was also obvious that he blames teachers for much of the problem.

It's because of the propaganda. There is a recent poll -- I think it was Gallup -- that showed that something like 80% of parents gave their own kid's school an A or B, about half gave the schools in their town or district an A or B, but some really small percentage like 20% gave public schools nationwide an A or B. So everyone thinks their own schools are fine, but the propagandists have made them hate schools and teachers overall.

I went into teaching believing it is the most important and honorable profession there is. It's really, really hard to keep that same passion going as we keep getting shat upon 24/7/365. If you want to make a teacher's day (week/month), tell them that you really appreciate what they do.
