To suggest that Solomon is a front-runner, or is that based more on more intangible factors like media attention, campaigning, and so forth?

too expensive for the local races, and we haven't had a real contested race for Congress or, really, for state Senate or Assembly in a long time. Maybe there will be some polling bought for this race.

Huffman is generally considered the front-runner because, yes, he's raised the most money, a total of $270,000 was announced sometime in July, and because he is the "highest level" elected official running.

Solomon announced in June that he's raised over $100,000 so far, so that's impressive, and  may have contributed to the upgrading -- at least in one PD story I saw -- of him as another "frontrunner."

Possibly it's because Sean Penn did some campaign appearances for Solomon recently?

Possibly it's because of Solomon's quick-out-of-the-starting-gates campaign presence which -- up here at least -- has been far stronger so far than the other candidates. Solomon was at the 4th of July parade in the town of Mendocino, and had volunteers at the county fair in Ukiah handing out literature. And the lit is very striking. here's a link to one full-page ad (not the only one) he ran in the weekly Pacific Sun:

Personally I really like the packets of sunflower seeds -- packed for the 2012 season -- he's handing out with his photo and sunflower logo and campaign info on them.

Solomon, who wrote the "Media Beat" column for years, does know how to work the media and the grassroots, too.
