  •  You do know that (17+ / 0-)

the President can only REQUEST to speak.  Congress must actually VOTE on whether to let him.

    You did know that, right?

How would a very public vote NOT to allow the President to speak have looked?

This way he pre-empts the NFL.

    •  I also gathered (5+ / 0-)

that there were Republicans promising to block the vote.  This was the road to nowhere so i do understand that the president was not getting his joint address to congress on the day of his choosing.  I guess I would have preferred to have him stick with the schedule and screw the GOP debate, and just give the speech from the Oval office.  It becomes very disheartening to see the caving.  That said, i do think the realities of the situation have to be acknowledged.

Let's make a bet....I will give you 100 dollars if it is pre-empted...you give me 10...

      good luck....

I have no idea what makes you think the NFL will be preempted...it makes you sound silly...

Obama is President of the United States. The powers vested in him state

He shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such Measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient; he may, on extraordinary Occasions, convene both Houses, or either of them, and in Case of Disagreement between them, with Respect to the Time of Adjournment, he may adjourn them to such Time as he shall think proper; he shall receive Ambassadors and other public Ministers; he shall take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed, and shall Commission all the Officers of the United States.
    •  But why would he request to speak.... (0+ / 0-)

...on the day of a heavily-touted GOP debate, the first with the now frontrunner?

Did he expect the GOP to capitulate?

Has it capitulated within the last year?

I would not have floated the Wednesday date unless the GOP had agreed.

But having done so, he had no choice but to speak on that date, whether it be in front of Congress, or from the Oval Office.
