Or whoever that is. He might as well replace the half-time shenanigans with a "jobs" speech that won't go anywhere. But since people like you tend to believe that folks are willing to accept a delay or interruption in their NFL game for a pedantic speech, why not? He will get his audience for sure, but whether it will do anything for his approval ratings is questionable.

      Gay polygamy?

I realize you come into this conversation with a lot of street cred, but I'm beginning to question some of your credentials when it comes to improving approval ratings.

He's under water in union households at 44/47. He's also under water with voters under 30 at 45/48. The Northeast tends to a pretty dependable region for Democrats but Obama's under water there at 47/49. Obama's usually been able to hold his ground with female voters but he's under water with them too at 45/49. And even with African Americans his approval rating's down to 76%, about as low as we've ever found it.

And yes I work with Unions all the time in Central PA. These people don't want a goddamn speech and shenanigans with speeches, they want jobs and job-security. Obama's approval rating will NOT improve unless those two things happen. Slight bump from a speech? Maybe. His best bet is to hope for Michelle Bachmann to be the Republican nominee.

        •  So You Think the Speech (5+ / 0-)

Shouldn't be happening at all.  I realize it's tricky changing the theory of relativity and all, but why not revise your list of four points above so that "Point Zero" is "Don't talk about jobs?"

Can you call your publisher?  Maybe they can issue a supplemental or at least get the next edition of the textbook out before Winter Semester.

The speech is not policy, it is not a guarantee for policy.

The speech is politics. Speech is giving the perception "hey I am doing something for you, I am thinking about you."

The speech will not solve the joblessness crisis that plagues middle-America, it will not solve the foreclosure crisis, or solve our budgetary crisis.

The speech is just a political tool to spurn the Congress into action, or failing which, putting them in a bind.

The speech at this moment is for a politician to be a politician and not be "above the political fray" as this President likes to be.

In that regard the speech is important. But the venue and time of delivering the speech is important too, if it is likely to have any impact at all. Giving a speech before a football game is just very, very bad timing, because no one wants their hour of fantasy to be spoiled by a harsh dose to reality.

          •  BTW you are not addressing the numbers (0+ / 0-)

Obviously the numbers don't speak highly of the job this WH is doing. And at the rate they are performing they will be left with a handful of supporters like you.

You kind of randomly inserted those.  Was the question asked: "Do you think employment is more or less important than football?"

Because I have to be honest, in Union households that's especially shocking.

              •  You're right, it is SHOCKING (0+ / 0-)

The President's approval rate is cratering and the only people with worse approval rating than him are the Congress and the tea-party. Oddly enough, the President has hitched his wagon to the latter.

So yeah, union households don't care much for speeches. They care for bread and butter issues. They don't need another speech to tell them that there are no jobs out there, or as you say it "jobs are more important than football."  They are looking for solutions, someone to fight for them, which seemingly they don't have in the WH. Otherwise, they are happy to forget that dismal reality for a few hours and watch football. A Presidential speech about joblessness is the last thing they need before their hour of fantasy, unless that speech happens to guarantee them that the unemployment crisis will be solved soon.

      •  Gay polygamy?! (0+ / 0-)

I'm sorry, but it is my firm belief that polygamy is between a man and 5 women. I feel that extending those rights to men would diminish my own polygamist marriage, both in civilized society and in the eyes of god.

I mean, what's next? A man marrying a pack of dogs?
