      the cable companies do with them is another story.

      If you live in an area subject to dangerous weather (which is getting to be pretty much everywhere), buy a dedicated weather radio.  These can be configured to specify the particular area for which you wish to receive alerts and/or turn off alarms for certain events which might not be important to you.

      It's not necessary to listen to Jim Cantore's breathless hype, watch rain-drenched "reporters" leaning into the wind, or listen to the same "breaking story" repeated constantly for hours on end.
