The madness must end. Gun trafficking to Mexico for the drug dealers, killings, shootings, billions that could be better spent wasted on a weed.
Since cannabis is from nature, there is no reason to ban it. you will NEVER end it's growing, production or the smoking of it. so any money spent on eradication is simply a waste.
Tax it, regulate it. Let businesses pop up to sell both the smoking and industrial cannabis.
It won't solve the deficit, but it WILL help. AND, it will cut 75% of the cartel's business.
It's a no-brainer, but then, our government isn't possessed with much in the brain department nowadays!

    •  Opium poppies are natural as well. Should we (0+ / 0-)

      grow them too?

in a substance that relieves pain?  Is such a substance produced by a natural plant more hazardous than such a substance produced in a chemical factory?

Is it an immoral act to attempt to alleviate one's pain?  Is suffering necessary to the proper development of human character?

Humans didn't create opium poppies or marijuana; God, in Her Infinite Compassion, Mercy and Wisdom, did.

The whole topic begs a bunch of questions.

it wouldn't be controversial. You know it. Also, a lot of poisons are natural. Ricin, for example. Does it mean we should be consuming them?

to make their own choices as to their own relationship with things that grow.

If I go out to my Mom's flower garden and process a little papaver to see what it's all about, does that make me a criminal?

          •  Huh? That's your argument? (0+ / 0-)

Of course no one thinks you should eat poisons. Get a grip.
But the billions wasted on trying to eradicate a weed is simply insanity.
Cannabis is harmless. No one has ever died from ingesting it or from an overdose. There is NO reason to keep it illegal.
besides saving billions now wasted on the bogus "War on Drugs" we would see billions in revenue from new products, regulation, etc.
Alcohol can kill you, but it's legal. Prohibition didn't work with that and it isn't working with drugs.

      •  Why not? (0+ / 0-)

Many, of not most, substances in their natural state are pretty harmless. Like coca leaves - millions in South America chew them every day. But make it into cocaine or crack and it's quite a different drug. (And yes, I am well aware there are poisonous plants and mushrooms, etc.)
The problem is not the plants/drugs themselves. The problem is the billions and billions we spend on eradicating a natural plant and trying to fend off drug cartels that only get richer and stronger.
End the prohibition and spend the money on health care and drug programs.
Prohibition NEVER works. It didn't with alcohol, it doesn't with drugs and it won't with cigarettes (as some want). All it does is create and empower the black market, cause a rise in crime and cost us billions that could be better spent.
