  •  Bill was (and is) the Man (13+ / 0-)

I grew up in the 60's a big Red Sox and Celtics fan. I loved the style of NBA play and the rivalries. Wilt vs Bill was the ultimate good vs evil for me, but the rivalry was played out in an uncommonly clear team concept. My high school coach said, "If you want to learn about basketball, watch the Celtics. If you want to learn about defense, watch Bill Russell. If you want to learn about being a leader, keep watching Russell."

I am glad he is still with us, his story still inspires me, even though I am 58 years old.

    •  Regarding Larry Bird (8+ / 0-)

I will say this because it gets understated.   When Magic gave his speech (regarding HIV) Larry Birds reaction was one of those that changed the message.

For a while after Magic announced, the worst forms of hatred, racism, and accussations circulated.

Bird coming out and saying how he felt about Magic from early on changed the way that entire conversation went.

      Starting about 3Min in.

And everything from 4 Minutes on.. wow.

Bill Russell said he always knew exactly what every man on the court was going to do before the man on the court knew it himself  Bob Cousy had an almost 360 peripheral vision and that made him dangerous as (may I say Hell?)

I loved watching the Celtics play, and I very much enjoy reading their books and books written about them.  Each man on the team knew exactly what his job was and did it excellently.
