  •  New information has to be received (9+ / 0-)

by the human brain three times before it even registers.  I think that's a default to prevent overload.
In any case, when the new information is contrary to or contradicts and already firmly held conviction, the new information has to be received many more times.  Some preconceived notions or prejudices are impossible to over come because supportive information is confirming and contrary information is dismissed as "the exception that proves the rule."  So, for example, the appointment of Clarence Thomas to the SCOTUS is evidence that blacks are not as smart as other people and Democrats who decry his performance on the bench are inadvertently validating that prejudice.

There is no room in the conservative mind for a dispassionate assessment because all their "thinking" is emotional, instinctive, from the gut.

Conservatives keep repeating the same message largely because they have poor memories.  The same story has to be repeated over and over again, like a bed time story, to provide the necessary reassurance and security.  Conservatives seem to be people whose emotional development never meshes with their cognitive faculties.  We say they act like children and that's an accurate description.  Where we err is in not recognizing they can't help it.  Conservatives are, if you will, emotionally retarded, stuck in kindergarten and still yearning for the teat -- comfort on demand.

    •  More about the Conservative mind (15+ / 0-)

All humans "think" with their guts, but studies show that Conservatives have larger areas in the brain that relate to being fearful.

I once asked a psychoanalyst friend why Conservatives are so vehement about their beliefs, why they repeat them so often. I got a very interesting reply. He said that it is as if they have to keep convincing themselves over and over again because their ideas go against the grain. If you look universally, all over the world, in all eras....the great philosophers and religious teachers is always about liberality, not selfishness....about sharing, not about greed.

I'm afraid I explain it badly, but I hope you get the idea.

think, speak as an alternative.  Instead of having an interior stream of thought to direct their behavior, they engage in a sort of monologue which allows information to be transferred from the mouth through the ears back inside, making it indistinguishable from other information that comes to them through the ears.
It may well be that all their sensory collectors (eyes, ears, nostrils, fingers and feet) are tuned to receive information from the outside, without any interior processing taking place.  Their optics are superficial, but so is their hearing and their sense of touch.  When it comes to the agility of their fingers, for example, it may well be that they're what we call "all thumbs"  If so, then conservatives are perhaps incompetent because their sensory instruments aren't well connected.
It's not unusual for the senses to compensate for some deficit.  Besides, if there's no internal processing of received speech, there's nothing to inhibit it being sent right back out.  Behavior we'd generally define as verbal nimbleness or acuity -- which is, of course, exactly what we see in conservative politicians.  They not only don't think before they speak; they have no idea what that even means.
