  •  Hah, no you can't. I've already seen the (15+ / 0-)

commercials for FOX Sunday football. They're advertising it as a special 9/11 tribute or something like that, I'm sure it will be complete with "God Bless America" and other jingoistic horseshit during the halftime show. Anything to get the ratings.

Sports are probably the last thing you'd want to watch Sunday to avoid it.

    •  For years (6+ / 0-)

duirng anthems at hockey games, on the jumbotron they'd show the towers falling. Then an Eagle soaring. Then a flag and then people would hoot and holler..

I don't sing or hoot out during the anthem.  I stand quietly but I shouldn't even do that.  However, I'm sure that if I remained seating I'd be beaten by the American Taliban.

Anthems at sporting events:  I find it almost like those old films of the Nazi parades.

      •  I went to the Cardinals game Friday (6+ / 0-)

I played along and stood for the anthem (there were Navy guys out on the field during the anthem, I stood more for them and less for the anthem). I kept my ass in my seat during God Bless America during the 7th inning stretch, but rose when they did Take Me Out To The Ballgame right after that.

And that's what a sporting event should have - more Take Me Out To The Ballgame and less God Bless America. Not everyone believes that a god exists or that America is so special that we deserve god's blessing any more than the other 200 countries on this planet. But everyone believes in buying peanuts and cracker jacks, even if they cost 10 bucks at the ballpark ;)

I've found hockey games to be much less patriotic - at least NHL games. Maybe it has something to do with watching a bunch of Russians and Swedes playing Canada's national sport.

        •  Yup (4+ / 0-)

It's not even patriotism, it's just forced nationalism.  Go Along to Get Along.

I'm so done with the militarization of everything.  They even had the Army of One do a stint at the NHL Awards show.  We turned it off for that.

At our high school, the Marines come out during the football games and they have several recruiting booths there.

I grew up in the military.  Some of my schools were on bases.  I've never seen so much militarization of schools and sporting events then as I do now.

    •  Oh, and Bush with a Bull (horn) (0+ / 0-)

If it's Fox, there is no doubt but "I hear you" will be part of it.

The anthem madness extended, as I recall, to "God Bless America" -- the very thing that prompted, "This Land Is Your Land" -- at every game of every sort. They missed out on "America the Beautiful," presumably, to avoid annoying the UK, whose anthem we repurposed. (Poor Henry Carey.)

Every reductio ad absurdum will seem like a good idea to some fool or another.
