    I make no claim to having the answers.  But I do know what hasn't worked - because it does nothing to dismantle the culture of violence.

    That is very hard work.  I should be pleased to engage in further discussions with you and everyone about how to do it without reifying the ideas that:

    a.)  harsher punishments stop violence

    b.)  the young are entirely responsible for acts of violence, when they commit them within a context of publicly sanctioned violence.  See Queer (In)justice for a deeper discussion of this)

    c.)  that accountability and harsher terms of punishment - death or extremely inhumane conditions of incarceration – can and should be conflated.
