    In modern warfare, the military needs to maintain a supply line from a reasonably safe location to the theater of battle.  Fossil fuels must be transported from a reasonably safe location to outposts and battlegrounds;  vehicles conveying them to the front are especially attractive targets since they explode when hit, sending out shards of glowing-hot metal in every direction.  Conversely, General Sherman showed how rapidly an army can move if it is not burdened by a supply line.
