    One thing people do not understand is this: justice is to the benefit of the one on whom justice is being applied. If there is a perfectly just and knowing Judge, then I want to be judged by him, because I can be sure that his judgement, and punishment, will be to my ultimate benefit.

    Just look at crappy parents. They get angry at their kids and met vengeful punishments. The children learn nothing but resentment. However, good parents, when kids misbehave, meet out punishments where the goal is for the children to learn from their mistakes.

    My point: the Justice System should not be in the business of meeting out Justice. It is not capable of it. The only goal of the Justice system ought to be to keep the people safe. There are two groups from whom we should be kept safe. First, there are those who break our laws. Second, the government. In this regard, the death penalty utterly fails to keep us safe: it does not keep us safe from the government at all.
