  •  I don't think that's necessarily true. (1+ / 0-)

Voters can vote their hopes or their fears. It will all come down to who people think will better protect their interests whether that means creating opportunity or not making things worse. And if it's a close election, like we had in 2000 and 2004, as it seems likely to be, It will come down to who convinces that final group of independent voters that they're the safer or more promising choice over the course of the last 8 weeks before election day and then who has the best GOTV effort once early voting begins, through election day. I honestly believe that this President is far too fine a politician to lose in a landslide with the advantages of incumbency at his command.

    •  We need to frame it as a choice about what (3+ / 0-)

futures we want from 2012 into the future, not a referendum about are people pleased about how 2008 and 2012 went, or Obama's "performance."

      •  I think the idea of the "referendum" presidential (0+ / 0-)

election is overblown. I think it really always comes down to a choice. I honestly can't think of a single presidential election I would consider a referendum, at least from FDR on, with the possible exception of Carter beating Ford under highly unusual and charged circumstances.
