Israel hopes that it can turn the people of Gaza against Hamas by punishing them and saying "See what Hamas made us do?!"  I think a similar logic dictates all Israeli actions towards the Palestinians as a whole: make them stop fighting us and then we'll stop hurting you.

Problem is it just doesn't work.  Israeli is only creating solidarity among the Gazans - they're all suffering together regardless of their attitude towards Hamas, Hezbollah, and Israel as well - and the Palestinians as a whole, and every day Israel becomes more the "other" and is perceived as implacably and indiscriminately hostile.  There's no possibility for a Palestinian person to remain neutral, no reward for personally being peaceful.  That is not how you win people over, but then Israel may not want to win anyone over, viewing that as a moral defeat.

The Palestinians will certainly never buy the rhetoric that Hamas and Hezbollah are responsible for their suffering, because Hamas and Hezbollah are not the ones blockading them, building walls and checkpoints, and stealing their land.  It's simply irrelevant to them what those entities do to motivate Israeli retaliation, and they certainly don't care if the retaliation is legal or justified.  But this is the case in any war.
