These comments make it very clear what I was doing wrong for my entire working career . . . but knowing what I now know, I wouldn't change anything except the occasional attack of self-doubt and despair from being devalued by my workplace associates.  I was never very attached to either career or status; coming out of school in the 70's I made it a point not to care about jobs because it was made clear to me that they were ephemeral and didn't give a damn about you.  I'd rather have my self-respect self-centered and intact than decimated by a sociopathic corporate employer.

Power appeals to me only when it is the power to right wrongs, improve competence, and correct injustice, and I'm just not willing to jump through the hoops or destroy my life in order to make a TINY difference in a corrupt and evil system.  I've taken advantage of such opportunities as have presented to a low-level administrative assistant, to reveal corruption and challenge unethical behavior, which along with a little nose-wiggling has opened up at least a few black holes to sunlight.  Otherwise, I find myself full of genuine compassion and pity for those who have wasted their lives running after the illusion of power while mucking up their karma.  They will never be happy, while I have occasionally known moments of bliss and ecstasy.

But if that doesn't work, there's always the Isabel Solution.  People who REALLY piss me off tend to find their businesses attacked by freak blizzards and hurricanes, although I've only managed one lightning-strike on demand and that was for demonstration purposes only.
