    Any of a number of motivators will do, including the belief that various relationships with others in one's life are stable.  

    For example "my husband still loves me, he's just been in a bad mood lately" and miss the signs that he's having an affair.

    For example "my boss still approves of my performance, he's just been too busy to talk lately" and miss the signs that you're about to get couped out of your job.  

    I just did one of these types of things with respect to a client of mine, much to my dismay.  

    And of course people readily believe all manner of overt bullshit if it's necessary to their survival in one sense or another.  "Going along to get along."
