you have to attend to both.  This isn't just a posting board; the interactions that we get here are part of what makes the site vibrant, useful, and to some degree influential.

I'm sure that we can all agree that there is some level of abusive and bigoted discourse that could take place here that could render the site a place that was unrespectable, inhospitable to non-dominant views.

We should also be able to agree that what writing crosses the line into abuse and bigotry does not come stamped "this is abusive and/or bigoted; please feel free to delete."  That is why you need a fair process to determine what is what.  Markos did not want to work towards a fair process (at least in the short term); the boycotters are punishing him by embarrassing him and, potentially, threatening his income and those of his employees.  That's their right.  It's not stupid; it's not trivial.  That something like this eould happen was both predictable and predicted.

I think that many of the boycotters are wrong on some of the merits.  They think that the censorship decisions to be made are straightforward and that people don't agree with them out of bigotry and perversity.  Sometimes that may be true, but I think that generally it isn't.  (In particular, the conflation of Obama criticism with racism is, I think, misplaced.)  Where they are right, though, is that the process for working through this has not been adequate to the task.  I'm not boycotting, but I am listening.

In my avatar, the blue bars show how many want Reps who COMPROMISE; the aqua bars show who wants Reps who STAND FAST no matter what. (Left=Overall; Center=Democrats; Right=Republicans.) And there's the problem!
