    American citizens work for free as interns in many major US corporations. No pay and no benefits.
    And it is no longer the young students who are willing to to this.

    Not to mention that this phenomenon is not endemic to the US.

      are free to leave at any time, with no repercussions and they're usually get extremely valuable experience in their field of choice - making them much, much more desirable when full time employment comes.  With professional positions, a person with education but no experience is quite often a cost for a company while they're getting trained, and having this experience under their belt makes a huge difference.  In those situations, the internship is simply an extension of their education, but without the attendant credit expenses.
