so fucking stupid and selfish to begin with? Doesn't take very much background research to realize that this is by far the more common outcome.

Fear of the unknown.  This was back in the mid 80's and was the first rail trail in the area so peole had nothing upon which to judge.  I had heard that many people in that community were afraid that it would bring crime to the area.  In fact, the effect was the opposite.

People around here have worried that thefts/rapes/litter/whatever else would follow the bike path. Hasn't happened yet, and I don't think it would be easy to put a TV on the handlebars and make a quick getaway.

a crime I would certainly choose to speed away on a bicycle!

Though I suspect that the bike paths might have led to an increase in stolen bicycles parked at businesses near the bike paths as people used the opportunity to patronize local shops. I bet when they steal the bicycles they use a car and a pre-existing road to speed the bike away from the location, though..

Perhaps we should close the roads, they seem more of a problem for thefts and such...

    •  Perhaps because the state was acquiring (0+ / 0-)

      the property by eminent domain?

      No one likes a bully.

Eminent domain should be reserved for truly essential projects.
