    Let's see, aren't these the same guys who decry being dependent on foreign oil (the answer is yes, btw)?

    More than a few studies have shown that people are not merely willing, but happy to commute on bicycle when it is a reasonable and safe thing to do.

    One of life's little pleasures for me and my wife is our walk (sometimes bike ride) to the local Starbucks where we sit can sit outside and watch, among other things, people riding their bikes to the train station (also to the courthouse down the street and assorted local business) for the commute downtown to Chicago.

    Bicycles are not the solution to our energy and transportation problem, but there's no need to put that weight on their willing handlebars. They are more than capable of contributing their fair share to the solution.

    And -- better still:

    You know those horrific health care costs that are a drag on American competitiveness and productivity?
    Bicycles aren't going to solve that either, but...
    people who can safely and pleasantly run some local errands on their bikes are going improve their health.

    And -- the capper;

    Lots of cheap bikes are made in China, but you start wanting a nicer bike when you rely on it to get around, even if it's only for some of your needs.  A lot of those nicer bikes are made right here in the US of A.

    Goodness. Sounds like the kind of thing honest Republicans should be fighting for, not against.

    LG: You know what? You got spunk. MR: Well, Yes... LG: I hate spunk!
