Any info on the ethnic breakdown of the Brooklyn portion of the district?

check out Gerritsenbeach.net for a little insight. Oh, and in case you haven't heard, ultra orthodox Jewish in Midwood. Socially conservative issue voters.   I would speculate that Weprin wrote these voters off early on.

that portion has areas that are heavily Chasidic/Orthodox Jewish, Russian (first or second-generation immigrant), and some old-line Italian American. Possibly also some Sephardic Jews, but I'm not sure about that. None of which are particularly progressive, especially on social issues (I think the same-sex marriage vote cost Weprin big time). That's based on my personal familiarity with the neighborhoods involved, not any hard data.

If they are members of the same sect, Chasidic voters also tend to very strong bloc voting, and a couple of their religious and political leaders endorsed Turner. The fact that Weprin is an observant orthodox Jew himself would not necessarily have much influence on such voter, since he's not as orthodox as they are.

And the Weprin name is very powerful in Queens, where both his father (Saul) and his brother (Mark) have been important in Democratic politics for many decades.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.
