    under federal contracts, but I'm not personally a contract worker as I understand the term.

    For example, the government might hire a firm such as the one I work for to do a site investigation and cleanup of a Superfund site for which the fund has taken responsibility (at least until cost recovery commences).

      I am an environmental consultant now and the pay is significantly better but the stress is very much higher. I'm not sure it's a good trade-off.

        But I don't think people generally distinguish between contractors and consultants who work under contract.

        Yes, the stress to do consulting can be greater, but you generally are compensated at a higher rate too.
