    Having no firm policy stances is substantive rather than stylistic. Just recently with the jobs bill Obama for 2 seconds went from "Pass this bill" to just me anything to sign. Either he has firm stances but is too chicken to defend them or he has no firm stances so where he falls is a crapshoot, which in either case the results are the same. This is the President of the United States, not some academic off in an ivory tower, so the President if he believes in something has to fight for it or choose another line of work besides the Presidency.
