programed for a tribal, interdependent, bonded existence.

I think this comes across more strongly than intended.

A large swath of America is made up of very cruel people, people who value their own self-indulgence over the welfare of their neighbors

I've taken care of Americans for 34 years, in ICU, in home care, and a lot of other places. I certainly have run into the bigots, racists, holier than thouists, etc. The vast majority of my patients have been very decent human beings. Heck, even the patients on the correctional unit were fine.

An ICU coworker once got a little fed up with a fundamentalist patient who would always say "thank you Jesus" any time something was done for her. Towards the end of a long night shift the nurse finally responded "My name is Peggy, you are welcome."

Humor, it's good for anything that ails you.

it's just that they define their "tribe" very narrowly, to themselves, their family members, and maybe some friends. Anybody they don't personally know, anybody who doesn't look, act, think, feel and believe exactly like them, is "not people".

This IS exactly how tribes used to think - they were/are "The People" and outsiders were "not people".

      If it's
      Not your body
      Then it's
      Not your choice
      AND it's
      None of your damn business!

      •  That is not what I learned getting the (0+ / 0-)

BS in sociology. A lot of tribes coexisted peacefully, trading and inter marrying.
