  •  So I wonder if anyone has asked (0+ / 0-)

Ron Paul how many times when he was a doctor, he waived his fee for those who couldn't pay.  Being a believer in the local community and all.  I assume he also accepted chickens and pies as payment.

Much as I am appalled by Paul's stance, as a physician, I can say that asking that question would be a mistake.  Except for a few boutique doctors, pretty much all physicians give loads of free care or care at less than the cost of delivering it.  To stay in business, we cost-shift to paying patients, something the Tea party and libertarian folks don't seem to undestand ( ie they are already paying for health care for the uninsured and underinsured).  In the absence of universal health care, we provide (badly, and at more expense) for the uninsured by overcharging the paying customers.
Even MediCal explicitly recognizes this, paying a supplement over their normal rates to hospitals where more than a certain percentage of patients have MediCal as their insurance.

So Paul could honestly answer that he has reduced his fee for uninsured patients, and that would cloud the issue, which is that he would rather that they justgo away and die.

As my father used to say,"We have the best government money can buy."
