    It may be a religious thing more than a racial thing, but it really is a perceived economic thing. If you are perceived to be a lower class individual (and granted, that is for many a racist judgment), then you should die rather than receiving help, because clearly you are lazy--see Hunter's earlier post. It also ties into the "prosperity gospel" garbage that has become mainstream for many religions in the US. Being poor has become equal to being evil, and therefore you should be killed to save the world for the good people. The problem is that a whole lot of people in the middle and lower classes think that they are higher up the chain than they really are, so they perceive not just people that are worse off (which would actually end up to be very few people), but also their peers and sometimes those with even more money as not being worth "saving."
