    I have noticed that the further south that you go in the Heartland, the worse the gravel gets. My gravel in Wisconsin in good. Minnesota is as well, but south Iowa, and in to Missouri, it is like you are driving on stones that are as big as the average human palm.

      Some of that may not be politics, but regional variations in the type of surfacing materials that can be produced in the area.

      Of course, they get better every 4 years when the election for county road commissioner comes around. When I lived in a city, I had no idea who the road commissioner was; now he is more important than the county mayor.
