    Obama is and has been, since he has been at least equally...and at most points more...focused on the deficit than on reason the health care reform plan is such a political disaster (still  more than 2 years from implementation, except a few minor provisions) is that it was designed to "lower the deficit" (though the accounting trick of counting the first ten years as 2010-2020, when the first four of those years had no universal coverage and hence no government subsidies).

      Even the Progressive Caucus is competing in the Titanic-deckchair-rearranging game of balancing the budget in the midst of a recession.

      Nobody in DC is willing to take the truly progressive position that, as Jamie Galbraith says, the budget deficit is a phony problem. And trying to tackle it in the midst of a sluggish economy will have terrible results for most Americans.
