    the economic downturn.
       If employment rates and economic growth were returned to normal levels, the deficit would shrink substantially.

       Another huge chunk of the deficit is the Bush tax cuts, which were non-productive essentally in terms of growing the economy and creating jobs.
       And a big piece is the wars we've been engaged in. However, the protection we gain from those wars in terms of "protecting the homeland" is close to non-existent, while the expenditures are ballooning the deficit.
        Besides which, the real threat to our Nation is economic in nature and will eat away at our core.
        A handful of demented yahoos half a world away pose an insignificant threatcompared to the damage we've let them do (and continue to let them do) to our economic prosperity.
