    Basically, it makes sense to put these things in the most efficient use first, as they ramp up capacity to produce them and see if they really do work as advertised in the real world.  If they do, then I think you will see much larger scale production over the long term.

    Think of it this way, there are already many parts of cars that significantly outlive the car (body panels and chassis come to mind).  Today we usually have to kill off a car due to problems with the engine or transmission, but since the development of better rust coatings, you never really hear about the car just rusting away with a perfectly good engine inside.

    The same could be true of these batteries in the long term, once there production ramps up.  With the still good batteries recycled in the same way that junkyards recycle cars for parts.
