  •  I'm a Volt owner and so may be (8+ / 0-)

a little biased but also pretty well informed about what Li-ion is currently capable of.  I'm hopeful of the advances in various battery technologies that are on the horizon but your dismissiveness regarding current technology does us all a bit of a disservice.

While my Volt's performance is at the better end of efficiency there are plenty of Volt owners with even better results than what I'm currently getting.  I am getting about 300 mpg over the 8 months of ownership.  I'm reducing my direct gasoline consumption by over 90 percent, reducing my fuel costs by nearly $2,000 per year and greatly enjoying the luxury feel of my Volt.

This is with the first generation of this technology being applied to the automotive world and I would encourage people not to discount the potential of this technology.  Yes, the Volt is still too expensive for many.  But the costs are rapidly declining while the energy density is continuing to improve for Li-ion batteries.  The future is bright for the electrification of transportation.
