  •  It's a fascinating thing (9+ / 0-)

To a great extent there's no longer a Republican party: there's movement conservatism, a more or less coherent ideology.  But there's nobody as good as the ideology, in the sense of fully representing it: no wonder, since the ideology makes no sense and can't really be implemented without marking the implementer as a lunatic.  That's OK for first-term members of Congress, not OK for would-be Presidents.  If Republicans could run the ideology as candidate, they undoubtedly would.

Democrats are, well, the opposite.  Our ideology is mushy and incoherent, although obviously it beats conservatism because it's driven by good rather than bad human qualities and it's empiricist at its core.  We're nowhere near as happy with our ideology as conservatives are with theirs.  The good news is that, muddling-through as liberalism has to in the real world, we have some pretty decent top-level talent.  There are probably 20 or even 50 people we could put out there if we didn't have an incumbent President, who would run circles around any Republican candidate real or potential.  That disparity is too enormous to be random--it's the ironic but welcome return on the ideological deficit we've been running vs, conservatism for over thirty years.
