  •  I think this may happen (0+ / 0-)

if it gets enough attention and they hang in there, documentary types will be all over it.

Also, people will begin to learn. It's true, there are a lot of people who don't realize just how limited their "rights" are with the police. In one video, I heard someone complaining that she had been "arrested" without being given her Miranda rights. if I remember from my undergrad criminal justice/civil liberties classes, the cops don't have to read you your rights until they book you. The only reason they sometimes say it sooner is because they want to make sure they can use whatever statements you're making against you—and that you know they can do it. Also, it makes for good tv, so we have a warped idea of how an arrest is supposed to go.

Screaming that you haven't been mirandized while you're in the street with a cop's knee in your back is really beside the point. They have you and you're going downtown. Your rights are a matter of procedure after that, and if they're violated, you'll have to sue and pursue that suit with vigor to get compensation. If it's bad enough, the cop's career will be in trouble, but that's the only thing they're going to worry about: what are the real world repercussions for their behavior. They can get away with a lot more than the average college student thinks they can. It's a surprise for a lot of us from nice white suburban homes the first time we realize it.

Mace, on the other hand, does not seemed called for at all in any of these situations. But it did look like in that video that some of the protesters were messing with the orange snowfence the cops were using as a corral. If one of them pushed back against a cop physically, that might have prompted the reaction (unreasonable as it may be).

    •  So as it turns out (0+ / 0-)

someone was able to get a higher-quality version of the video and run an analysis on it to see exactly who did what.  It makes the incident much clearer.

And if the Blue Sky Mining Company won't come to my rescue, if the sugar refining company won't save me, who's gonna save me?
