  •  Wrong. (7+ / 0-)

My daily driver is a 1973 British sports car.  It is definitely a toy.

I used to work with a guy who drove a '69 XKE.  His personalized tags read, "SMYTOY".

Machines can most definitely be toys.

    •  It wasn't a well thought out comment (7+ / 0-)

      Many "toys" are actually machines.

I got his point, but disagreed with it :)

      •  People "play" with various tools and cause (0+ / 0-)

all sorts of destructive and unintended results, like burning off a whole shitload of carbon emmissions for nothing more than a testosterone rush.

But I guess that it takes all kinds.

There can be no protection locally if we're content to ignore the fact that there are no controls globally.

is that every leisure activity consumes some resources in a pursuit that others could describe as "unnecessary".

So what are we to do?

In my case, for example, I ride old motorcycles that I restore. That is a comparatively "green" activity, given that about 50% of the emissions that any vehicle is responsible for actually happen during their manufacture. The running is a small part.

Equally .... my bikes are substantially less polluting than a car. If I were using the Windstar to tow a camper 500 miles, to "commune with nature", then the related emissions and consumption of resources would be rather higher than a 1000 mile motorcycle rally.

          You didn't think this through.
