  •  I think acknowledging the distinction (5+ / 0-)

of why they booed him validates ignoring his uniform.

    •  After rereading all this several times (10+ / 0-)

I want to add that I think there are two themes going on here that are both legit. For Republicans to boo any soldier, especially given their gross abuse of the phrase "We support our troops", is pretty fucked up. But they did boo. And they did it because he is gay, making (not that it wasn't already) homosexuality an issue that overrides service to country. I can see both your points, and I hope this is an area where both can be seen as very honest and distinct issues that need addressed.

    •  How? (0+ / 0-)

Why should we gays be put back in the closet?  Why should we pretend that our sexual orientation is any less valid than straights?  Or any less important or any less defining?  That is unequal citizenship.

We cannot purport to want to throw open the closet doors, only to shut them for key moments.

what I am trying to say if you think I'm advocating for putting Stephen Hill back in the closet. Even as I typed this in the diary:

Not that there's anything shameful about mentioning Stephen Hill is gay.

And I think I've typed out my opinion in so many ways that I don't know how else to try to explain the point I was trying to make. It probably isn't that important a point and it probably isn't worth continuing.
