    of San Francisco than New York. There was a larger artisitc community in New York (read: Greenwich Village) prior to WWII out of which emerged the gay community that later became so familiar. The influx of military in the port city of San Francisco was more instrumental in creating the gay neighborhoods in the Tenderloin and Polk Street which later moved to the Haight and the Castro. Pre-WWII gay life was more minimal and mainly centered in the artists' enclave in North Beach.
