I read it while we were living in Japan on a base outside Tokyo--he base library actually had it!

The last time we mixed religion and politics people got burned at the stake.

And The Band Played On is really THE most important book in understanding how HIV spread across the world. The fact that he was gay and HIV+ while writing the book (and kept it a secret) underscores the poignancy of what he writes.

You know - at the time he wrote his first book I was easing out of the closet, only 18 and finding my way. His books infused me with an understanding of gay culture and history and what that meant, what being a gay MAN meant - in all of its forms - at a time when being gay meant you were a shameful, loathsome creature who crept around the edges of society and begged for scraps of acceptance from straight people. For a lacrosse-playing gay boy like me - his words meant a lot. And now - more than 20 years later - they mean a million times more.
