    Of course it's complicated and the shift will require large infrastructural investment. But the benefits are vast.

        for it to make economic sense to electrify rural America, it never would have happened. How about economic sense to build the interstate road system? Does it make economic sense to let oil and coal companies destroy our public lands for their personal profit? Sometimes it is the task of our government to take the long view. In fact it does make economic sense to transition to clean renewable energy. The effect on raising the GDP of America from making this investment will be enormous. It may take 10 years of hard work, but the USA will be making a great leap forward and one that has a far more lasting effect than the space race (another thing that didn't make "economic sense").
